Alfred de Quervain and Arnold Heim
A project carried out by Uummannaq Polar Institute
The Book
In 1909 the Swiss geologist Arnold Heim completed a scientific expedition to Disko Island and the Nuussuaq Peninsula. On this expedition he took over 700 photos, many of which are of high quality. Subsequently, a part of the photographs have been hand-colored.
At the same time, the Swiss alpine and polar explorer and meteorologist Alfred de Quervain completed a scientific expedition in Uummannaq fjord and on the ice cap. Arnold Heim was involved in the final stage of de Quervain's expedition.
In 1912 Alfred de Quervain became the first polar explorer ever to cross the central Greenlandic ice cap from west to east. From this expedition, there also exist hand-colored photos.
It is these unique historical photographs that are the basis for this book on Greenland 100 years ago.
